The Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO) is Canada’s national radio observatory featuring Canada's premiere Earth station facility. ARO is a division Thoth Technology.
ARO’s 46 m antenna is the largest fully steerable dish in Canada and one of the largest in the world. The observatory is situated on a wild and breathtakingly beautiful site in Algonquin Park. The observatory hosts a suite of scientific equipment including its own atomic clock and operates with a state-of-the-art technical capability.
ARO is currently used for Space Situational Awareness (SSA) using Thoth's Earthfence GEO deep space radar.
Thoth also has research programs with the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and the Dunlap Institute at the University of Toronto. ARO is used in a technique called "scintillometry" that combines Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) with scattering in the interstellar medium to study pulsars and the intervening matter between us and them. ARO is also used to observe fast radio bursts.
ARO is the official ground station for Northern Light.
